HALLOWEEN...what is it actually a celebration of? While many view it as harmless fun, the Bible, (although it does not mention Halloween) indicates that the practices associated with it are NOT.
Its origin (Halloween) is traced to an ancient pagan festival celebrated by Celtic people over 2,000 years ago. The pagan Samhain festival (pronounced "sow" "en") celebrated the final harvest, death, and the onset of winter, for three days; October 31 to November 2. They believed the curtain dividing the living and the dead lifted during Samhain to allow the spirits of the dead to walk among the living. According to the book Halloween—An American Holiday, An American History, some of the Celts wore ghoulish costumes so that wandering spirits would mistake them for one of their own and leave them alone. Others offered sweets to the spirits to appease them. In medieval Europe, the Catholic clergy adopted local pagan customs and had their adherents go from house to house wearing costumes and requesting small gifts.
The Roman Catholic Church brought Christianity to the Celtic peoples in the seventh century. Pope Gregory IV later moved the church’s "All Saints Day" from the spring to November 1st to replace the observance of Samhain. All Saint’s Day honors believers who had died. The night before, which featured a sacred vigil in church, became known as "All Hallow’s Eve" and the old practices of the Celtics died and were denounced by the church as witchcraft. This is how Halloween became known as a witch’s holiday.
Halloween is NOT for the SAINTS (Born again believers) of the MOST HIGH GOD! HE (GOD) clearly instructs us in HIS HOLY WORD that we should OPPOSE wicked spirit forces, NOT celebrate with them. (Ephesians 6:12)
